Applying eyeliner just might be the trickiest part of our daily makeup routine and it’s definitely one of the easiest elements to mess up badly. On the other hand, when done right, eyeliner can be the absolute focal point and highlight of a well made up face. Just like with plucking eyebrows or painting your nails, applying eyeliner perfectly is one of those elusive “womanly skills” that comes with plenty of practice. If you work at it a bit you can develop an eyeliner technique that will leave with drop-dead gorgeous eyes that will look like they were made up by a professional every time.
Before you begin, it’s a good idea to apply a flesh-colored matte eye shadow along the lash line of the lid where you’re going to apply your liner. This will make it go on more smoothly and evenly. Whether you’re using a liquid liner or a pencil, it’s always best to start at the outer corner of your eye and work your way inward. Work is small sections so you can check your work as you go, as opposed to drawing one big, long line. If you goof up, simply cover the area with some concealer on a Q-tip. This will keep you from having to wash your whole face and start over. Once you have a uniform line going across the lash line you can then thicken or extend the outer corner to open up the eyes and get that beautiful cat eye effect. Next, use a thin brush to smudge the liner a bit so the lines aren’t too severe. And if you want a dramatic, smoky eye that lasts all night you can go over the liner with a dark eye shadow to emphasize it more. A smoky grey or navy will add depth to a line of black liner.
